How many ChatGPT models are there – and which one is truly the best fit for you?

For the first time, OpenAI has released a comprehensive comparison of its six available models, offering clear recommendations on which to use in each scenario.

Currently, ChatGPT provides six different AI models to choose from – but not all of them are suited for every task. According to Bleeping Computer, OpenAI has officially published a complete overview for the first time. So which model fits which job? And how many requests does each allow?

A complete look at OpenAI’s AI models

Until recently, most users were unaware of the specific purposes each model was designed to serve. In its online article “ChatGPT Enterprise – Models and Limitations,” OpenAI has finally clarified this: for the first time, all existing models are presented along with precise recommendations for each use case. While the overview primarily targets enterprise customers, the information is valuable for all users.

At present, the six available models are: GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, o4-mini, o4-mini-high, o3, and o1-pro.

GPT-4o vs. GPT-4.5: Which one is better?

According to OpenAI, GPT-4o is a powerful, multimodal model capable of real-time processing. It is especially suited for tasks such as content summarization, drafting emails, and brainstorming ideas. GPT-4o supports a wide array of file types—from text, images, and audio to video and Excel files. Its biggest advantage: unlimited usage.

Meanwhile, GPT-4.5 leans more toward creative tasks. It stands out for higher emotional intelligence, better conversational skills, and more inventive approaches to ideation. While it shares many similarities with GPT-4o, GPT-4.5 is considered a stronger option for creative work. However, usage is limited to 20 queries per week, according to OpenAI’s overview.

When should you choose o4-mini, o4-mini-high, and o3?

The o4-mini, o4-mini-high, and o3 models are specifically designed to handle complex argument structures. In particular, the o4-mini is well suited for engineering, science, programming projects, and visual inference tasks.

If more computing power and accuracy are needed, users can choose the o4-mini-high, which is intended for advanced programming, complex mathematical calculations, and in-depth scientific analysis.

o3 is even more powerful: it is ideal for special tasks that require multiple layers of complexity — like strategic planning, detailed analysis, large-scale encryption workflows, advanced mathematics, or in-depth scientific interpretation.

All three models are capable of processing images, documents, and CSV files. However, usage is limited to different levels: o4-mini: up to 300 requests/day; o4-mini-high: up to 100 requests/day; o3: only 100 requests/week.

From 4o to o1-pro: Each model has its role

The o1-pro model is especially recommended when logical accuracy is the highest priority. Although response times may be slightly longer, OpenAI notes that it delivers exceptionally reliable results on highly complex tasks.

For example, you can prompt it to: “Develop a financial forecasting algorithm based on theoretical models,” or “Create a multi-page synthesis of current technology research.”

GPT-4o remains the top choice

If you need an everyday workhorse, GPT-4o remains the best overall option. This omni model, with real-time, multimodal capabilities, can handle everything from meeting summaries and text optimization to idea development. Additionally, the unlimited usage is a major advantage, ensuring you can work without disruption.
